Artist Statement of Pete Moorhouse

I recently completed a large steel sculpture for the entrance to Frenchay Hospital and am currently working on public artworks for a library in Poole. My approach to public art is to engage the local community in the project with a series of workshops both to feed in their ideas and get feedback on emerging designs to give the community a sense of ownership.

I specialise in creating high quality durable steel sculpture for the outdoor environment. These are either commissioned works to suit specific location or limited edition work from my portfolio.

Reviews of work by Pete Moorhouse

"We are absolutely delighted with our sculptures, they look amazing. The weather today is just glorious, allowing me to take in the changes, what with the shadows and reflections, they look different from every angle, each time you look at them, fantastic!"

Shirley Williams, Cornwall

“Moorhouse’s work is restrained and rigorous. It is deliberately kept minimal avoiding superfluous ornamentation and distracting effects and thus has a strong impact and communicates clearly. The influence of Minimalism is particularly evident with their strict geometries, seriality and preference for monochromaticism, which emphasise the works form and content”

Museum of Modern Art, Wales.

“Pete worked on the Luton Dunstable Busway project for 18 months. This was a project to create five large public artworks reflecting elements of contemporary history. As part of the project he organised and delivered a series of workshops for local schools. Pete also conducted a number of public consultations with the local community.

Pete is very organised and professional. He takes initiative and has a good overview of the public art process. He was very good at communication with all stakeholders involved.

Pete delivered five outstanding large scale stainless steel sculpture. The designs were striking and reflected the theme very well. Pete also listened and incorporated elements into the design from the workshops and consultations. The sculptures were fabricated to an extremely high standard, produced on time and delivered great value for money.

The installation of the artworks went very smoothly and they have now become part of the local landscape. Pete documented the whole project on a dedicated website that he created which was a great way to keep the entire process visible and engaging.

It was a pleasure to work with Pete on this project and we would highly recommend him for other Public Art projects.”

Emma Van Nieuwenburgh, Arts Development Officer – Central Bedfordshire Council

“Thanks to Pete for all his hard work and perseverance in completing this project for us. The schools he worked with were truly enthused by his approach and the opportunity to see their work installed on the cycle track. He really worked over and above the original brief to ensure the best outcome possible.”

Alison Catlin, Arts Development Officer, South Gloucestershire Council.

"Peter was selected for the Hamworthy Library commission on the evidence and quality of his diverse practice in previous commissions and the range of his concepts and designs employed. His approach to school and community workshops was refreshing and his methods of creative involvement; effective and inspiring during the project’s concept design stages. This preparatory work enabled Peter to design a series of bold and striking interventions which have been installed both inside the building and within the landscaped area outside. The selection panel found Peter a pleasure to work with, due to his organisational skills and professionalism and we have been very pleased with the value for money that his involvement in this commission has demonstrated."

Teaching Experience

I am a professional sculptor who runs sculpture workshops, for key stages 1-4, that lead to pupils creating a permanent artwork.

I work in collaboration with pupils to design high quality artwork - sculpture, wall relief or text based work made in steel or other metals for the school grounds/buildings.

For the pupils it is a wonderful opportunity for them to take ownership of a project that has an end product and that can visually enhance their school environment.

"The problem of contemporary sculpture and the garden is one which has rankled in my mind for years. It is usually resolved through a process of inversion-that is turning it into sculpture in the garden as against garden sculpture. By that I mean the sculptor takes over the garden as an open exhibition gallery, of which the focus is their creation, to which the world of nature merely provides the frame. The Idea that sculpture is a contributory element to an overall'mise en scene',in which, sometimes its role may be incedental rather than central, has been lost.In this we have seen the betrayall of the great tradition of garden sculpture, one which was unashamed at being decorative or delightful."

Customer comment on 'Brasil - Chess (Corporate Commission of an entire edition)' by Plamen Dimitrov
Although it seemed a daunting project to commission a sculpture on the internet with a tight deadline, Plamen Dimitrov in Bulgaria made it as easy as possible for me in Brazil by producing a series of little clay sketches after each email and sending photos it seemed by return. He worked round the clock and was incredibly intuitive with his understanding of what I wanted. This was despite an 8 hour time difference and having poor English as our common language. He w...
